In his book, THE OUTERMOST HOUSE, American naturalist and author Henry Beston has this to say about Cape Cod: East of America, there stands in the open Atlantic the last fragment of an ancient and vanished land, worn by the breakers and the rains, and disintegrated by the wind: It stands bold. This line, in particular the word bold, aptly describes the draggy coast of the Cape, a place that takes on an almost mythological stature in the American psyche, the myth created by bold images of seafarers, beach houses, fierce winds and the massive spray of humpback whales and perhaps most famously, JFK jogging down the beach. Cranberries have a long history on the Cape. The sweet and tangy berries were first discovered thousands of years ago by the original native inhabitants and then introduced to Europeans as they began to arrive. Over time, cranberries grew to become an essential component of the European diet, especially among whalers who ate them to ward off scurvy. By the year 1683 the first notable development in what would become the modern industry took place with the invention of Cranberry juice.
